Micro-scale knots make materials unusually tough

Greer Julia Microscale Knots.2e16d0ba.fill 1600x810 c100Engineers at the California Institute of Technology have developed a new material made from interconnected micro-scale knots.

The knots are said to make the material far tougher than identically structured but unknotted materials as they absorb more energy and are able to deform more while still being able to return to their original shape undamaged.
