Conflicting reports over Cambodian clothing workers’ strike

Conflicting reports have emerged of the support given to a week-long stay-at-home protest by Cambodia’s clothing workers, who are demanding a living wages.

Reuters reported that the planned strike by thousands of workers appeared to have fallen flat after most returned to works days before the end of a proposed stoppage.

A programme officer at the Coalition of Cambodian Apparel Workers’ Democratic Union (C.CAWDU) said no workers took part in the strike, while C.CAWDU president Ath Thorn said employees at “more than 10” factories were on strike on 17 April, but admitted that a majority of the workers had returned to work.
