Rapid production of smart shoe uppers

FootfallsNottingham, UK-based Footfalls & Heartbeats has created a knitted shoe upper that can measure gait when someone is walking or running.

“The shoes are produced on a Santoni X machine, knitted in under 12 minutes per shoe and are able to measure gait and footfall whether walking or running,” said company founder Simon McMaster.

“No embedded electronics are required, just knitted textile sensors that measure pressure and then relay the true-on body movement to a user interface of choice.”
