The UK’s Trade Union Congress (TUC) is urging the UK government to take action over the increase in the repression of clothing workers in Cambodia.

In a letter to British Business Secretary Vince Cable, TUC general secretary Frances O’Grady (pictured) urged the government to force British clothing companies to investigate whether garments sourced from Cambodia are made at factories with fair labour practices.

O’Grady warned that “repression against workers taking strike action” is growing in Cambodian factories, which are increasingly supplying Europe’s demand for cheap clothing and footwear.

In January, H&M, Gap, Puma and Adidas were among several Western clothing groups that wrote to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen demanding that his government stop using violence against striking workers.
