Refugee crisis gives concerns for Hungarian laundry sector

Among the tens of thousands of Syrian and other refugees attempting to cross Hungary on their way to Western Europe are a number of fatally sick people. The Hungarian Society of Textile Technology and Science (TMTE) is concerned about the possible health risks caused by infectious clothing.

In July 2015 the National Health Insurance Fund of Hungary published a new regulation regarding the healthcare service for refugees in case of emergencies. This, however, lacks a specific regulation for the handling of refugees’ clothing.

Although the Hungarian laundry industry offers high-quality services and is functioning well, TMTE is worried that the risk of spreading infection will increase owing to the lack of such a specific regulation.
